The Biedermeier style developed in Germany during the years 1815-1848 with the emphasis on clean lines and minimal ornamentation. Following Napolean’s defeat at Waterloo Europe experienced a relatively peaceful period during which the middle class prospered and looked for less ornate but well styled furniture which was highly functional. Biedermeier Furniture can be described as Empire Furniture shorn of most of its ornamentation.
