The Windsor chair was developed in the vicinity of High Wycombe, England in the late 17th century, but was named for the largest local town of Windsor, Berkshire, England. The design is characterized by a solid wood seat into which are inserted turned legs, stretchers, posts, and spindles of various degrees of delicacy. The style combines steam-bent bows, backs and cut and shaped arm pieces with the turnings to create strong durable and relatively lightweight chairs which have become classics.
