Walnut Blanket Chest for George & Marie: George came to me with a tear-out from Antiques Digest, a photo of a regular size blanket chest with a drawer similar to this. He needed a much larger chest without the drawer to store a rug collection. This scaled–up version is the result and, though I cannot stretch out fully, I can lay comfortably inside with just a slight bend to my legs. Pictured in walnut with cherry inlay, the finish is natural and all the dovetails were cut by hand. Routing out the walnut for the inlay was nerve-wracking. I used a hand guided Dremel brand router. These days I could just visit one of my friends with a CNC router and get equal or more precise cuts in a fraction of the time and with none of the worry.
The box was delivered across the country and the original lock on this walnut blanket chest stuck. A California furniture-making friend of a friend agreed to make the repair. It required her being closed inside the box with a flashlight to make sure the new lock functioned properly. She wasn’t particularly happy thinking inside the box.
