Thomas Chippendale’s (1718-1779) furniture includes a variety of styles from Rococo to Gothic and oriental. When he died his business was carried on by his son who was also named Thomas. Chippendale furniture or Chippendale style furniture was so named because Thomas (the first) was the first cabinetmaker to publish a popular book of his designs: The Gentlemen and Cabinet-maker’s Director. The result was his designs became popular and widely copied in his time as well as the present.
